For many agents, selling Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) during the annual enrollment period (AEP) represents a big part of their income. But you can’t just jump right into it. If you’re a new agent, you should strongly consider getting your AHIP certification, which you’ll need if you want to sell Medicare Advantage and PDPs.
Why Do I Need AHIP Certification?
When you’re selling Medicare Advantage plans, you need to keep in mind that there are a lot of rules and regulations governing what you can and can’t do. These regulations help ensure that consumers are protected from many unethical marketing practices. Regulations change every year, and your AHIP certification does expire. But you can always get re-certified. AHIP certification proves to your consumer, and your carrier relations, that you’ve undergone AHIP Medicare training and are well-versed in the most recent CMS regulations.
How Do I Get My AHIP Certification?
To receive your AHIP certification, you’ll have to pass a test. In fact, passing the test means having to get at least 90 percent of the questions right. The good news is you’ll get two hours to finish the test, and it is an open-book exam. You’ll also get three attempts to pass it.
You’ll have plenty of time to prepare for the test, if you start as soon as possible. It’s extremely important that you don’t wait too long. Before you know it, AEP will be here, and you’ll miss the chance to tap into the senior market for an entire year if you do not have AHIP certification.
